Boston – Mattapan Line Reopens
Rail Transit Online, January 2008
Giving the public only two days notice, the MBTA on Dec. 22 reopened the 2.5-mi. (4 km) Mattapan Trolley Line, connecting the Red Line at Ashmont station with Dorchester, Milton and Mattapan. The route, which is equipped with rehabilitated PCC streetcars, was closed in June 2006 to allow a complete reconstruction of Ashmont station, including the trolley viaduct, and full restoration of seven streetcar stations with new concrete platforms, improved shelters and upgraded security. The job was scheduled to be completed in a year but is not yet complete. Work will continue through the spring, according to the MBTA. Not yet started is a program to retrofit air conditioning to the PCCs.
