Charlotte, NC — Full Funding OKd
Rail Transit Online – June 2005
A Full Funding Grant Agreement for Charlotte’s 9.6-mi.
(15.4 km) South Corridor LRT line was signed on May 6 by Federal Transit
Administration Administrator Jennifer L. Dorn. The deal releases $193
million in federal funds for the $427-million project, which is scheduled to
open in April 2007. The announcement was made at the future LRV maintenance
facility, where Mayor Pat McCrory ceremonially hammered home a golden
spike. “Charlotte will join the growing number of communities — from
Seattle to Phoenix to Washington, D.C. — pursuing a new American dream
shaped by an expanding transit network of light rail lines, subways,
commuter rail and buses running in dedicated lanes,” said Dorn, who attended
the event. “Charlotte is in the vanguard of communities that understand how
robust transit investment, combined with smart land use planning, can fuel
business and housing development.” |
