Charlotte, NC — Trolley Success
Rail Transit Online – July 2005
A quarter-of-a-million
people have ridden the Charlotte Trolley since service began on June 28,
2004. One person was singled out during the weekend of June 11-12 as the
symbolic 250,000th passenger and given prizes donated by local
businesses and a trolley pass. Charlotte Area Transit System officials had
projected 100,000 boardings by the end of the trolley’s first year. The
2.1-mi. (3.38 km) line serves 10 stations between the Historic South End and
Center City using three replica Birney cars manufactured by Gomaco plus
77-year-old Charlotte car No. 85, which underwent a $200,000 overhaul.
