Charlotte, NC — Extension Work Begins
May 2017
The Charlotte Observer reported on May 24 that utility work will be starting related to the planned extension of the city-owned Gold Line streetcar serving Uptown. The 1.5-mile line served by Gomaco-built double truck replica Birneys will be extended on both its east and west ends. Once the expanded line is in service, the Birneys willl be replaced by modern streetcars to give the line a contemporary image.
A stretch of East 7th Street east of uptown Charlotte will be closed. The closure is needed for utility work as part of the CityLYNX Gold Line Phase 2 construction, which will extend the current streetcar segment by 2.5 miles on both the east and west ends of the line.
The first 1.5-mile phase opened in 2015. The plan is to eventually have a 10-mile line from the Eastland Mall site to the Rosa Parks Transit Center near Interstate 85 and Beatties Ford Road. |
