Memphis — Shutdown After FireMarch 2014
The heritage streetcar system operated by Memphis Area Transit Authority [MATA] has been shut down because of a fire on March 1 and the reopening is uncertain, the Memphis Commercial-Appeal reported in an update Sunday. The entire system was closed because of fire damage to the overhead trolley wire.
Memphis firefighters responded to a fire call at Main and Winchester Streets downtown. They found an 18-wheel truck on fire and leaking diesel fuel. All trolley routes were shutdown until the wire is inspected and, if needed, repaired. The truck was passing under the I-40 bridge, where the trolley wire is lower due to the limited clearance, when the cab struck the wire leading to the fire.
No injuries were reported. |
