New Orleans — Streetcar Celebration
Rail Transit Online, December 2007
Another segment of the historic New Orleans streetcar system reopened on Nov. 10 with a civic celebration complete with marching band. Car No. 900 led a parade of iconic Perley Thomas streetcars along three miles (4.8 km) of St. Charles Avenue from Lee Circle to Napoleon Avenue to the cheers of bystanders. The line has been closed since Hurricane Katrina wiped out the traction power system. The remaining 3.5-mi. (5.6 km) segment of the St. Charles route is expected to re-open early next year.
