New Orleans — Streetcar Return Continues
Rail Transit Online, January 2008
Another segment of the historic St. Charles Avenue streetcar line resumed service on Dec. 23. Cars now operate between Canal Street and Napoleon Avenue for the first time since Hurricane Katrina knocked out
the traction power system. Eight original 1923 Perley Thomas streetcars will be in service on weekdays, with additional vehicles available as needed. The modern replica heritage fleet is still sidelined with
water damage. Headways are 10 min. on weekdays and 15 min. on weekends. The final section of the St. Charles line to South Claiborne Avenue is expected to reopen in spring.
