Portland — Streetcar Extension OK'd
Rail Transit Online, August 2006
The city council has voted unanimously to approve an
eight-block, $14.5-million extension of the Portland Streetcar from
RiverPlace to Lowell Street at the south end of the South Waterfront
District. Lawmakers approved an $11.9-million construction contract with
Stacy & Witbeck, which has built all previous streetcar segments, and a
$442,200 operating deal with nonprofit Portland Streetcar Inc. Work is
expected to start during August and be completed in fall 2007. The new line
will run in a one-way couplet south on Southwest Moody Avenue and north on
Bond Avenue. In addition to city funding, contributions will come from
property owners and a state grant. The streetcar is considered to be a
primary catalyst for redevelopment of the South Waterfront. |
