San Francisco – Trolley Extension Study
Rail Transit Online – August 2004
An
extension of the Municipal Railway’s heritage streetcar service from the
Fisherman’s Wharf area to Lower Fort Mason and the Presidio is the subject
of a feasibility study now underway by Wilbur Smith Associates. The project
would be completed in two phases, the first to Fort Mason. The F-Market and
Wharves line currently runs from Market and Castro streets, through the
Downtown and along the northern Waterfront to Fisherman's Wharf at Jones &
Beach Streets using restored PCCs and 75-year-old Peter Witt cars imported
from Milan, Italy. Muni is planning to extend the heritage trolleys south
to 4th and King Streets and inaugurate a new E-Line that would operate from
there to the Wharf or beyond, providing a streetcar link between the city’s
northern and central waterfronts. |
