San Francisco – Streetcar to Fort Mason
Rail Transit Online – June 2006
Plans
are moving forward for an environmental impact study of a proposed extension
of the F-Market and Wharves heritage streetcar line from Fisherman's Wharf
to Fort Mason. The project would include reopening a 1914 trolley tunnel
beneath Fort Mason that was closed in 1983. A seismic study of the tunnel
funded by the National Park Service has already been completed and it’s now
estimated that necessary upgrades would cost about $8 million. A technical
feasibility study determined there would be no insurmountable roadblocks to
the $50-million project, although a final route alignment must still be
selected. The Park Service, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation
Agency and the FTA are cooperating on the extension. |
