Tucson ― Transportation Plan OKd
Rail Transit Online, June 2006
Voters overwhelmingly
approved a Regional Transportation Plan and half-percent sales tax increase
to finance it. The measure will primarily pay for road and sidewalk
construction, capacity improvements and expanded bus service. The only rail
component is a four-mile (6.4 km), $87.7-million modern streetcar starter
line from the University Medical Center, through the University of Arizona
campus and downtown to the Rio Nuevo master plan area. However, the sales
tax will only provide the local share; significant federal funding will be
required to get the project moving. |
