Bayonne — Trolley Update
Rail Transit Online, April 2007
Planning continues for a heritage streetcar circulator
line serving the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor, a massive mixed-use waterfront
redevelopment project on the site of the former Military Ocean Terminal.
The Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority (BLRA) is paying $235,000 for an
engineering study of the streetcar proposal by Washington International
Group. The authority has requested $50 million from the federal government
to cover capital costs, including an initial $5-million grant to initiate a
more detailed study. Still to be decided is whether to use up to eight
former Newark City Subway PCCs that have been set aside for the project or
buy new replica heritage cars. Reconditioning the PCCs could cost about
$1.6 million each but BLRA consultants estimate new vehicles would have a
price tag of $1.9 million. The line will be about 2.4 mi. (3.7 km) long and
run east-west, across the Peninsula from the Hudson-Bergen LRT station at
34th Street to a development district near the entrance to the Cape Liberty
cruise port.
