Cincinnati — LaHood to Attend Groundbreaking
February 2012
Cincinnati's Fox 19 television reports that U.S. Transportaion Secretary Ray LaHood, along with Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff, and Mayor Mark Mallory will formally break ground for the 3.6 mile long streetcar system on Friday, February 17, 2012.
Federal funding is crucial to the project as $39.9 million has come from the U.S. Department of Transportation, including $10.9 million in TIGER III funding awarded in December, 2011, plus $25 million from the FTA's once-off Urban Circulator grant program, as well as $4 million in a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant.
The line will connect downtown and the Over-the-Rhine neighborhoods and is expected to help spur the rejuvenation of the area by attracting new businesses and encouraging citizens to visit the nieghborhoods.
