Detroit — Stacy and Witbeck Hired

July 2013

It was reported by progressiverailroading.com that M-1 Rail, the nonprofit managing the Woodward Avenue streetcar project, has engaged Stacy and Witbeck to serve as general contractor and construction manager. A groundbreaking is to occur in early fall in downtown.

Stacy and Witbeck constructed streetcar systems in Portland and San Francisco. Cuurently under construction by Stacy and Witbeck are the First Hill Streetcar in Seattle, the Sugar House Streetcar in Salt Lake City, and the Union Station-to-Oak Cliff Streetcar in Dallas.

The firm will work with design firm URS Corp and HNTB Michigan to make the project as efficient as possible.

Cost estimates for the project range from $135 million to $145 million, including $35 million to $45 million for the state- and federally funded Woodward Avenue reconstruction projects that will be completed in conjunction with Segment 2 of the streetcar construction.

M-1 Rail President and Chief Executive Officer Matthew Cullen said the city's recent Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing will not adversely affect the project.
