The federal government appears ready to
spend $200,000 for a transit alternatives analysis on a proposed downtown
circulator system. Among the modes to be studied are light rail or
streetcars and rubber–tire trolley replicas. If approved by Congress, the
grant will require the city to invest another $50,000 to cover the total
cost of the 12- to 18-month study. Local officials hope to hire consultants
by the end of September. The system will be designed to serve both tourists
and the long-term needs of residents who live, work and use recreational
facilities downtown.
