Fort Lauderdale — Federal Funding Awarded

Federal Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood announced that Ft. Lauderdale's modern streetcar project has been awarded $18 million in TIGER funding, according to the Sun Sentinal. This money will be applied to the first stage of the 2.7-mile Wave Streetcar. Officials hope to begin construction in 2014 and start operations in 2015.
The balance of the funding for the $140 million project is expect to come from the state of Florida, Broward County, the city, and property owners along the route.
Project supporters expect the line both to improve transportation in the area it serves but also to help spur economic development and job creation. |
