FTA Releases $60.8 million

The Federal Transit Administration has released $60.8 million under the Small Starts program for the $195.2 million Wave modern streetcar line on the Fort Lauderdale, Florida Atlantic Ocean coastline, the Sun-Sentinel newspaper's website reports. $52.7 million will be contributed by the state with the remaining $59.8 million from local sources including Broward County. The Wave will use Siemens S70 streetcars under a deal that allows Fort Lauderdale to tag onto the Charlotte, North Carolina, order for S70 LRVs. Editorial Criticizes Streetcar Plans

Fort Lauderdale on the Floriida north of Miami is planning to build The Wave modern streetcar line using dual-mode (battery and pantograph) Siemens S70 streetcar models similar to Atlanta and Salt Lake City but the Sun-Sentinel newspaper in an editorial calls it a runaway dream citing scalating cost estimates and doubts about the selected route. Construction Bids Rejected
