Lancaster — Streetcar Recommended
Rail Transit Online, November 2006
Mayor Rick Gray has endorsed a proposal for a streetcar loop in central
Lancaster that was contained in a study by consultant Stone Consulting &
Design commissioned by the Red Rose Transit Authority. The north-south
circulator would run from Southern Market Center on Vine Street, north on
Queen Street to the Amtrak station, then south on Prince Street. Stone’s
report called the project, which would cost an estimated $14.1 million, “…a
worthwhile investment that could help alleviate traffic and help city shops
and businesses by bringing customers to them.” Mayor Gray agreed, calling
the rail route an economic development tool that could reduce the number of
autos coming into the city. The idea dates back to 2001, when a feasibility
study for a 2.3-mi. (3.7 km) heritage trolley line was completed. So far,
no funding for the project has been identified and no solid proposal has
been made to move forward. However, further studies could include an
east-west loop. |
