Miami — Streetcar Meetings
Rail Transit Online, March 2006
Miami city officials met with Federal Transit Administration and DoT
staffers the week of Feb. 20 as part of an effort to win federal funding
from the Small Starts program for a proposed $130-million modern streetcar
system. The project would have two routes:
- A 6.75-mi. (10.86 km) north-south line from Southeast/Southwest 1st to
Northeast 41st streets and the Civic Center complex (NW 10th Avenue)
- A 2.8-mi. (4.5 km) east-west loop along Northwest 20th Street from
Northeast 2nd to Northwest 10th avenues, then south to Northwest 17th
Street and east back to Northeast 2nd Avenue.
“Discussion will range not only in costs and funding, but also the
schedule of the streetcar project, its implementation and impact on the
community,” Mary Conway, city director of capital improvements and
transportation, told Miami Today. An Alternate Analysis and Environmental
Assessment is underway and should be completed this summer. The city is
seeking about $50 million from Washington under SAFETEA-LU plus additional
cash from Small Starts, which is limited to projects with a price tag of
less than $250 million.
