Montgomery — Downtown Trolley
Rail Transit Online, January 2005
The Montgomery Riverfront Development Foundation has
proposed building an electric streetcar or light rail line through downtown
to help enhance tourism and economic development. Foundation officials
estimated the capital cost at approximately $25 million, but the group must
first raise about $50,000 for a preliminary feasibility study. “Light rail
is an exciting concept,” Mayor Bobby Bright told the Montgomery
Advertiser. “I'm supportive of anything that will enhance downtown
Montgomery, but there are still some significant question marks surrounding
the light rail, most notably funding.” However, John Acken, the
foundation’s rail task force chairman, said federal money could pay for much
of the project as it has in other cities where streetcars have proven
successful. Although precise routes have not been selected, the line would
serve many of the city’s major traffic generators including entertainment
venues, the state Capitol and Riverfront Stadium. |
