Philadelphia – Final PCC
Rail Transit Online, December 2004
The last of 18
remanufactured PCCs, No. 2337, was released by Brookville Equipment Co. on
Nov. 22 and shipped to Philadelphia, where it arrived the next day. The
cars will be used to restore rail service on Route 15-Girard, which was
“temporarily” converted from trolleys to buses in 1992. The service was to
be restored last June 13 but was put on hold because residents — and their
political representatives — along three blocks of North 59th Street between
Vine Street and Girard Avenue object to a parking ban on one side of the
street, which is used to access SEPTA’s Callowhill Depot. With autos parked
on both sides, there would be insufficient clearance for the streetcars to
pass. Residents feel they’ve been neglected by SEPTA during the planning
process and their objections have blocked city council approval of the
change in parking rules. |
