Providence, RI — Streetcars Mentioned
Rail Transit Online, May 2006
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA)
presented its “vision for the future” to a state legislative commission on
Apr. 11 and the proposal included the possibility of initiating a streetcar
system in Providence. According to RIPTA Assistant General Manager for
Planning Mark Therrien, the rails could serve Valley Street and Allens
Avenue in Providence and a planned waterfront redevelopment project in East
Providence, where streetcars could help spur more intensive development.
Streetcars have already been studied by the state and city governments but
no concrete proposals have been put forth. The commission is expected to
make recommendations to the legislature during the current session. |
