Yet another California city is evalutaing reintroduction of streetcars, reports the pe.com site. Caltrans has awarded Riverside a $237,500 grant to study Mayor William “Rusty” Bailey’s plan for a modern streetcar line in the city.

The grant, announced in August 2013, “really validates the streetcar concept and allows us to move forward on a serious examination of important next steps,” Bailey said in a written statement.

Supporters are proposing “Riverside Reconnects,” a 12-mile streetcar route between UC Riverside and downtown following University Avenue, and from downtown to La Sierra via Magnolia Avenue. A four-mile UCR-downtown stretch would be the first phase.
