San Antonio — Foxx Visit
January 2014
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx visited San Antonio on January 7, 2014 and got a briefing on the streetcar network proposed by VIA Metropolitan Transit, the San Antonio Express-News reports.
Local officials presented an overview of the plans for a 5.9 mile streetcar line and the Secretary referred to it as "transformative." He also described the city as “probably the largest city in the country without some rail connection within its transit system.”
Foxx did not commit to Federal funding for the project, but San Antonio officials are hoping that federal funding will be available to cover some of the $280 million estimated cost. So far VIA has $210 million committed to the project, all from sources within Texas. |
