Tampa — Streetcar Extension
Rail Transit Online, October 2004
The city council on Sept. 24 passed a
resolution calling for an extension of the TECO Line Streetcar north to
Whiting Street and asking for financial help from the federal government,
although a specific amount wasn’t mentioned. The expansion of the 2.5-mi.
(4 km) line, which now connects Ybor City to the Channel District, would
bring the trolley closer to downtown. However, Mayor Pam Iorio and other
elected officials said the city doesn’t have any money for the project.
Council member Shawn Harrison said the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit
Authority, hasn't been aggressive enough in seeking money for the
extension. The initial $56-million line was primarily financed by
Washington, with a $13-million contribution from the city.
