Hillsborough
Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) will hold public hearings this summer on
a proposed three-route, approximately 30-mile light rail project. All of the
corridors under consideration serve downtown, with one terminating at the
University of South Florida (Northeast), another at the Port of Tampa
(Southwest) and the third at the West Shore, serving local sports stadiums and
St. Joseph's Hospital. This version is very similar to a network studied two
years ago. However, that one included extending the West Corridor to Tampa
International Airport as part of the initial phase. The current plan calls for
an airport link at a later stage. There are several potential routes along each
corridor, with five options alone for the western leg. HART is considering both
electric and diesel LRVs.
