Wilmington, DE — Trolley Design
Rail Transit Online, February 2001
Parsons Brinckerhoff has been awarded a
contract for preliminary engineering and pre-engineering service for a proposed
two-mile electric trolley line serving downtown Wilmington.
The replica vintage streetcars would serve
commercial, retail and tourist destinations along Market Street in the northern
part of the rundown central business district starting at Rodney Square (see
RTOL, Nov. 2000). The line would pass the Amtrak station and terminate at the
redeveloped Christina riverfront area. City officials believe the trolley line,
which they hope to have running by 2004, will help stimulate economic
development. So far, 23 potential station locations have been identified but
that number will be reduced during preliminary engineering. The federal
government has appropriated $6 million for the project over the past two years. |
